Strategic Business Intelligence
1970 - 1999
During 1970-1999, information systems and information technology investments were framed as strategic assets enabling competitive advantage through data-driven decision making, process integration, and value-adding capabilities across products and services. Research matured a methodological infrastructure—MIS research frameworks, systematic planning, governance, and guidance through frameworks, environment considerations, and critical success factors guiding information systems planning and alignment with business strategy. Foundational data modeling and information architecture underpinned Business Intelligence, with emphasis on the entity-relationship model, information archipelago concepts, and evidence-based presentation guiding management decisions, while organizational redesign and network-centric perspectives broadened BI to value networks and inter-organizational information flows.
